RE: 1st Day of Deer Season

When we had our goats, one of them was the color of a deer -- hence her name -- "Bambi" -- we thought about getting a blaze orange "vest" for her during deer season just to be on the safe side. Kind of funny, but sad, too . . .
Whoever shot the horse is a criminal and needs to be punished as such. :M

RE: What did you forget?

After forgetting things in years past, mom now makes a "menu" that she keeps taped to a cabinet in the kitchen. Now, we doublecheck the menu and don't forget anything! :)

RE: What's in a name?

No matter what we've had, from truck camper (slide-in) to travel trailer, to 5th wheel to Class C, we've ALWAYS called it a camper. Often, when I'm on-line talking about our current one, I call it the 5er.
However, when we ask folks in our store what kind of "RV" they have, oftentimes, they will say, "Oh, we don't have an RV, we have a pop-up." Seems folks around here think that a "camper" is anything without an engine. An RV is either a Class A or C. I don't get it. They're all campers to me, and I don't care if it cost $500,000. It's still a "camper" to me.
I've never had anyone get snippy with me for calling anything a camper. Folks who are insulted by that, with their noses so high up in the air need to be careful they don't drown the next time it rains! :B
Here's a funny . . . a couple years ago, I was talking with a couple of neighbors in early April about us going camping in a week or so. She told me we were going to freeze by going so early in the year! The other neighbor looked at her and said "have you seen what they camp in? It's a motel on wheels!" LOL :B What a hoot!
So, whatever you call it . . . just enjoy it . . . and to heck with the snotty folks!

RE: ?'s about diesel

In response to the OP, I live in North Central Wisconsin and we get VERY cold temps in the winter. I usually park my truck in the garage and if it's going to be zero or lower overnight, I plug my truck in. I use a timer so it's only on for about 2 hours before I generally leave and that works great.
There are two reasons I do this:
1. To make it easier to start on very cold mornings; and
2. So my toes aren't frozen by the time I get to work because I still don't have any heat!
I only have a ten minute drive to work, so I really like having heat to keep my toes warm!
As for additives, I've never used them.

RE: "Monster" Thanksgiving!!!! 200 for dinner!!!

WOW! That's a LOT of people!
My cousins have a LARGE gathering, too . . .
My aunt and uncle had 9 kids (2 have passed away); so that's 14 kids (with spouses).
Mary -- 2 kids now with spouses +2 and 1 child (21)
Jim -- 2 kids -- no spouses or kids (23)
Scott -- 2 kids -- no spouses or kids (25)
Jim -- 2 kids -- 2 girlfriends; no kids (29)
Nancy -- 2 kids -- no spouses or kids (31)
Judy -- 2 kids -- no spouses or kids (33)
Katie -- no kids (33)
That's THIRTY THREE people in the IMMEDIATE family! YIKES! They have turkeys, ducks and geese as their main meat. Seeing as they all hunt, the turkeys, ducks & geese are all wild game and REALLY tasty! Everyone, of course, chips in as far as food is concerned.
I can't imagine having that many folks in my immediate family, but I must say, they are my FAVORITE family to go visit! They're a TON of fun and really care about each other.

RE: Input from members

improve RV.net ?
first place I would start is with these dammed wiggle/shaking adds in the middle of the forum pages.
If you use Mozilla (Firefox) as your browser, you won't see ANY ads at all! The last time I used the forum with Explorer, I couldn't believe how different it looked! I LOVE Firefox -- as to millions of other users -- for the ability to block those annoying ads.
It has also saved me a TON of money, because I realized how intrusive those ads can be and if I don't want to see them myself and use a browser that blocks them, I don't waste my advertising dollars by placing them! Truly, a win-win situation! :B

RE: Old Fashioned Giblet Gravy

Yes, even in 2008, people still make giblet gravy! Not sure what that has to do with anything.
Here's how my mom makes it every year.
1/2 carrot, diced
1 stalk celery, diced
giblets & neck (leave whole)
water
4 peppercorns
medium onion, diced
salt
1 bay leaf
Put all in a large kettle and simmer until gizzard is done. Cut up the giblets, heart & liver. (Mom only adds the neck for flavor -- usually we cut it up and give it to the dog, but you can include it if you want.)
Remove peppercorns and bay leaf. Strain everything from the water and put it in a small food processor to grind it up and then put it back in the kettle with the water it boiled in. Add turkey drippings and flour to make the gravy.
Enjoy!

RE: Chocolate Spritz (Cookie Press) Cookies! YUM!!!!

Rebecca, I don't see why you couldn't do that! The inside diameter of the cookie press is about the size of a silver dollar, so that should help give you an idea of what size "log" to make out of the dough.

Chocolate Spritz (Cookie Press) Cookies! YUM!!!!

Found this recipe on-line and made them today. WOW!!!!!!!! They're AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chocolate Spritz Cookies
1-1/4 cups butter
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup brown sugar, packed
2 large eggs
3-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
Preheat oven to 375. In a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer, beat butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
In another bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Gradually stir flour mixture into butter mixture. Shape dough into a log and place in your cookie press.
Press cookies out onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.
Decorate with sprinkles, candied cherries, melted white chocolate, or sandwich with vanilla frosting.
Makes about 60

RE: How to quickly thaw butter?

Thanks, folks! Erica didn't realize I asked for help here and nuked the sticks for 30 seconds at power level 2. It worked GREAT!
As for freezing it . . . well, we use Country Crock for every day, but I like to use real butter for baking so don't use it all the time. I have limited room in the fridge, and when butter's on sale, I buy a couple extras and just toss them in the freezer. Usually I know in advance when I want to bake something and take the butter out the day before so it's never been an issue before.

RE: It's DONE! It's finally DONE!

I have a card from our family taped to the box, but added the following note inside the gift:
Dear Nici:
Let me start by saying I really wish we could have been there to share in this wonderful, magical time. There is nothing like being pregnant and giving life to another. Nothing can compare to the love you have for your little baby and the love you will feel the instant she is born.
When I first heard you were pregnant, I knew, without a doubt that Grandma's knitting needles would have been clicking away making a blanket for your precious little baby. I also knew that I had to make that baby blanket. Please know that I know Grandma is here and watches over all of us and helps to keep us safe from harm. I also know she was with me when I was making this blanket for you, blowing angel kisses into each and every stitch.
Every baby deserves a hand-made blanket. Please do not "save" this blanket for show, but use it every single day to wrap your little baby in love and warmth from up north and from Heaven.
All my love,
Aunti Julie

RE: Deer Hunting with an 11 year old!

Thank you, Billion!
Aaron and Abby are home now. They're both exhausted and Abby's almost asleep on the couch already! LOL Their group got a total of three deer.
Aaron wounded one, but another guy got the kill so he got the deer. Fortunately, they only have two days of school this week, so he'll be out there again Wednesday morning. Abby says she's going to go, too.
The good news is Abby learned her lesson and didn't scream out when she saw a deer! LOL
I really love how Aaron and Abby get along so well. He really takes care of her and watches over her.
Oh, and Erica (our 14 y/o middle child) and I had a couple of great days all alone together (Greg was always working). No fighting, no complaining, no nothing but getting along and having some great mother-daughter time!
I sometimes wonder how I got such wonderful kids! :)

RE: Deer Hunting with an 11 year old!

Well, I heard from Aaron! So far, their group of seven has gotten two deer! I guess Abby wasn't quite so loud today! :B They're not sure yet how they're going to split them up. I guess we'll find out when Aaron and Abby get home!
Julie
PS, I'm not a hunter, either, but deer hunting in this part of the state is practically a religious holiday! :B The kids even get excused absences from school if they're hunting! :E :)

RE: It's DONE! It's finally DONE!

Thanks, everyone! When I picked out the colors -- they don't show up very well in the pic (they're a soft seafoam-type green and very pale soft yellow) we didn't know what she was having. We now know she's having a little girl.
I learned how to crochet when I was 19. At the time, I worked in an office with a couple of little old ladies who would crochet in the break room all the time. When I found out my sister was pregnant with the first baby in the family, I asked them to teach me how to crochet. As I was living at home at the time and didn't want my mother to know, I couldn't work on it at home at all. I made that blanket on my lunch hour at work and on Sundays when I'd sit at the local tavern (where Greg bartended) during the football games! Man, oh man, did he take some ribbing for that! LOL The first afghan I made for myself I finished in a month! I crocheted instead of eating, and lost 20 pounds that month! :B
I can still remember the look on my sister's face when she opened the blanket and said "did you make this?" It was very heartwarming. Since then, I taught her how to crochet and also taught my mother! Now mom crochet's all the time and sister and I do on occasion. I've tried to teach Erica, but she's all thumbs . . . LOL Maybe when she's a little older . . .

It's DONE! It's finally DONE!

Our niece is having the first baby in the family! Wahoo! I know if Greg's mom were still here she'd have been knitting her little heart out for her new little great-grandbaby. With that in mind, and knowing no one else in the family crochets or knits, I decided to grab my hooks and make a baby blanket! After all, every baby deserves a hand-made blanket, right?
Nici's shower is this coming weekend, so I had to get moving to get that blanket finished so I can send it to them. Unfortunately, we can't make it to the shower.
Yehaw! It's DONE! It's finally DONE! I'm so pleased with it as it really turned out beautiful. I hadn't crocheted in a LONG time, so this was truly a labor of love. Loving thoughts of my mother-in-law were included in every stitch. I can't wait for Nici to open the gift. Nici's 's the type of young person who will truly appreciate a gift like this.
